What to Expect

Play Therapy

In play therapy, children are given the time, space, and freedom to express themselves in the way that comes most naturally to them—through play. Rather than relying solely on words, children use toys, art, and imaginative play to communicate feelings, process experiences, and work through challenges. As a Child-Centered Play Therapist, I follow your child’s lead while providing a safe, supportive, and accepting environment that fosters emotional growth and healing. Caregivers are an essential part of the process. I believe meaningful change happens through healthy connection, so I work collaboratively with caregivers to support your child both inside and outside of the therapy room.

Intake

At The Grove we have a two-step intake process before beginning therapy with your child. The first appointment will be with the caregiver(s) to share their concerns, the child's background and general functioning, and for the therapist to get a better understanding of the situation. The second appointment may be either with the child alone or with the parent and the child, whatever makes the child feel most comfortable. This is a chance for the child and the therapist to get to know one another, build trust, and for the therapist to begin assessing the needs of the child and a strategy moving forward. Sometimes it is helpful to have a third session just with parents before beginning with the child to make sure everyone is on the same page and to answer any remaining questions.

Appointment Logistics

The two Intake appointments are 55 minutes each. After that we engage in individual sessions with the child or child and caregiver as needed. These are typically 55 minutes each, but sometimes 30 or 45 minutes are best for the child, and insurance is billed accordingly.

A $50 fee will be charged for late cancellations with limited exceptions. Insurance does not cover No Shows or Late Cancellations.

Insurances Accepted

We accept Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and are in the process of accepting Aetna and Geisinger.
